TOPIC 2 : IDENTITY AND PERCEPTION
I learned that everyone has multiple identities that are transacted through communication, but at the same time, it also defines who you are as a person. This topic also demonstrates perception, which is someone’s perspective or point of view. Everyone is prejudiced in some way or another. From a young age, individuals observe or are taught discrimination against others. Whether it is because of religion, sexuality, race, gender, personality, or just someone’s way of life, everyone is biased. In many ways, who we are today, is influenced by our race, ethnicity, and culture, and overall individual identities. Every experience, positive or negative, has an impact on how we react to something in the future. Decisions others make, can impact the way we interact with others, our personal beliefs, and all together our life experiences. Along our path in life, we meet people with different goals and circumstances they’ve encountered which make them who they are and why they do certain things a certain way.
In
this reflective paper, I discuss several aspects of my race, ethnicity, and
culture that have made me who I am, and impacted my overall individual identity.
When it comes to identifying myself, I need to let know
others that my race matter and it should not define me in a bad term. My race
always teaches us how to respect and help each other. To help people, we
always communicate especially when gathering or do celebrations with family
members. We always help by cleaning or cooking and keeping in touch with
family members. Our culture is always helping each other during the time of
celebration, welcoming the day of birth or death is important for us to lighten
the burden and speed things up.
Other
than that, I always thought that I need to always increase my self-esteem to
know the real self-identity that when I achieve all my dreams then only I will
be successful. I think I need to do a lot more to start looking good by
involving in sports and start playing gym. I feel overwhelmed when I am around
smart and successful people. For instance, I always with my good friend and
support system like family members to keep me going.
Lastly, in my opinion, identity is important to everyone because everyone has multiple identities. With these identities, people understand how to look at themselves. Self-concept, self-esteem, and self-awareness are influenced by the way you communicate. It is important to understand oneself will help a person perceives others better because when one perceives, always check the common tendencies to avoid misconception.
